He went outside to look for ideas for his drawings and paintings. He always carried a sketchbook, pencils and watercolors with him. When he found what he wanted to paint, he drew and drew a lot of sketches in his sketchbook, he went on for hours and hours. Later, in his studio, he painted on a big canvas, using as a guide the sketches from what he saw during the day.
